The Prophet ﷺ performed ablution and wiped over his socks and sandals.
حدثنا هناد ومحمود بن غيلان قالا حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي قيس عن هزيل بن شرحبيل
توضأ النبي ﷺ ومسح على الجوربين والنعلين
[Its isnad is daif]. Abu Dawud recorded it in the Book of Purification, chapter on wiping over socks, no. 159, and Ibn Majah, no. 559, from the hadith of Waki with the same wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 198, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 176. Sufyan Thawri used the ambiguous transmission form (an'ana), but his hadith has many corroborating reports with Abu Dawud (no. 146) and others, among them the consensus of the companions, as I have mentioned in Nayl al-Maqsud. This consensus makes this hadith unnecessary, and may Allah make it easy for us to publish it.There is also a report on this subject from Abu Musa [Ibn Majah, no. 560].As for the report attributed to Abu Hanifa, its chain is fabricated. It contains Salih bin Muhammad Tirmidhi, who was a liar and a fraud, may Allah curse him.
