I saw the Prophet ﷺ wipe over the leather socks on their upper surface.
حدثنا علي بن حجر قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزناد عن أبيه عن عروة بن الزبير
رأيت النبي ﷺ يمسح على الخفين على ظاهرهما
[Its isnad is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Purification, Chapter on How to Wipe (over the socks), no. 161, through Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad with this chain, and it was transmitted from him by Sulayman bin Dawud Hashimi and others (Sunan al-Kubra Tayalisi, no. 692, of Bayhaqi, 1/291, and others). Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 85. It also has another route in Tayalisi and others, and its isnad is hasan.
