He performed ablution and wiped over his leather socks. I asked him about that, and he said, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ perform ablution and wipe over his leather socks."I asked him, "Was that before Surah al-Maidah or after Surah al-Maidah?"He replied, "I did not embrace Islam until after Surah al-Maidah."Qutayba narrated this to us, saying Khalid bin Ziyad al-Tirmidhi narrated to us, from Muqatil bin Hayyan, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Jareer.He said, Baqiyya also narrated it from Ibrahim bin Adham, from Muqatil bin Hayyan, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Jareer.This hadith is clarifying, because some of those who rejected wiping over the leather socks interpreted that the Prophet's ﷺ wiping over the leather socks took place before the revelation of Surah al-Maidah. Yet Jareer mentioned in his hadith that he saw the Prophet ﷺ wipe over his leather socks after the revelation of Surah al-Maidah.
ويروى عن شهر بن حوشب قال
توضأ ومسح على خفيه فقلت له في ذلك فقال رأيت النبي ﷺ توضأ ومسح على خفيه فقلت له أقبل المائدة أم بعد المائدة فقال ما أسلمت إلا بعد المائدة حدثنا بذلك قتيبة حدثنا خالد بن زياد الترمذي عن مقاتل بن حيان عن شهر بن حوشب عن جرير قال وروى بقية عن إبراهيم بن أدهم عن مقاتل بن حيان عن شهر بن حوشب عن جرير وهذا حديث مفسر لأن بعض من أنكر المسح على الخفين تأول أن مسح النبي ﷺ على الخفين كان قبل نزول المائدة وذكر جرير في حديثه أنه رأى النبي ﷺ مسح على الخفين بعد نزول المائدة
