Abu Qatada reported,

He was with the Prophet ﷺ when, on part of the road to Mecca, he fell behind with some of his companions who were in a state of ihram, while he himself was not in ihram. He spotted a wild donkey and mounted his horse. He asked his companions to hand him his whip, but they refused. He asked them for his spear, but they refused as well. So he took it himself, then charged at the donkey and killed it. Some of the Prophet's ﷺ companions ate from it while others refused. When they caught up with the Prophet ﷺ, they asked him about it, and he said, "It is simply food that Allah has provided for you to eat."
