A man from Banu Fazarah gave the Prophet ﷺ as a gift a she-camel from the camels they had captured at al-Ghabah. The Prophet ﷺ gave him some compensation in return, but the man was displeased with it.I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from this pulpit, "Some men among the Arabs give one of them a gift, and I compensate him for it according to what I have. Then he becomes displeased with it and continues to express his displeasure with me. By Allah, after this stand of mine, I will not accept a gift from any Arab man except a Qurashi, an Ansari, a Thaqafi, or a Dawsi."

أهدى رجل من بني فزارة إلى النبي ﷺ ناقة من إبله التي كانوا أصابوا بالغابة فعوضه منها بعض العوض فتسخطه فسمعت رسول الله ﷺ على هذا المنبر يقول إن رجالا من العرب يهدي أحدهم الهدية فأعوضه منها بقدر ما عندي ثم يتسخطه فيظل يتسخط علي وايم الله لا أقبل بعد مقامي هذا من رجل من العرب هدية إلا من قرشي أو أنصاري أو ثقفي أو دوسي
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud also narrated it, in the chapter on trade, section on accepting gifts, no. 3537, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, using the same wording, and he narrated it with an ambiguous form of transmission ("an"). The hadith has other routes in Ibn Hibban, nos. 1145 and 1146, and elsewhere, and with these routes it is sahih. See the previous hadith.
