The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What excellent tribes are al-Azd and al-Ashariyyun. They do not flee in battle, nor do they steal from the spoils. They are from me and I am from them."The narrator said, I related this to Muawiya, and he said, "That is not how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it. He said, 'They are from me and to me.'"I replied, "That is not how my father narrated it to me. Rather, he told me, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, They are from me and I am from them.'"Muawiya said, "You know best the narration of your father."
حدثنا إبراهيم بن يعقوب وغير واحد قالوا حدثنا وهب بن جرير حدثنا أبي قال سمعت عبد الله بن ملاذ يحدث عن نمير بن أوس عن مالك بن مسروح
قال رسول الله ﷺ نعم الحي الأسد والأشعريون لا يفرون في القتال ولا يغلون هم مني وأنا منهم قال فحدثت بذلك معاوية فقال ليس هكذا قال رسول الله ﷺ قال هم مني وإلي فقلت ليس هكذا حدثني أبي ولكنه حدثني قال سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول هم مني وأنا منهم قال فأنت أعلم بحديث أبيك
[Its isnad is hasan]. Ahmad narrated it, 4/129, 164, from Wahb bin Jareer bin Hazim with the same wording, and Hakim graded it sahih, 22/138, 139, and Dhahabi agreed with him.Muawiya is Ibn Abu Sufyan, Abdullah bin Milad, whom Hakim and Dhahabi deemed reliable, and Tirmidhi graded him hasan, so his hadith does not fall below the rank of hasan.
