Zayd bin Arqam reported,

We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with us were some bedouin Arabs. We would race each other to the water, but the bedouins would beat us to it. A bedouin would outpace his companions, fill the watering trough, place stones around it, and cover it with a leather mat until his companions arrived.A man from the Ansar came to one of the bedouins and let his camel's reins loose so it could drink, but the bedouin refused to let him. So the man pulled out the plug holding back the water, and the bedouin raised his stick and struck the head of the Ansari, gashing it open. The Ansari went to Abdullah bin Ubayy, the chief of the hypocrites, and told him what had happened, for he was one of his associates. Abdullah bin Ubayy became angry and said, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, so that they will disperse from around him," meaning the bedouins, who used to come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at mealtimes.Abdullah said, "When they have dispersed from around Muhammad, then bring food to Muhammad so he and those with him may eat alone." Then he said to his companions, "If we return to Madinah, the mightier shall surely expel the weaker from it."Zayd said, I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I heard Abdullah bin Ubayy. So I told my uncle, who went and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him, but he swore an oath and denied it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ believed him and disbelieved me.My uncle came to me and said, "You have only managed to make the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hate you, and to have him and the Muslims call you a liar."Such grief fell upon me as had never fallen upon anyone. While I was traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, my head was drooping from sorrow when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came up to me, tugged my ear, and laughed in my face. Nothing in this world would have pleased me more, not even eternal life on earth. Then Abu Bakr caught up with me and asked, "What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you?"I replied, "He said nothing to me, he only tugged my ear and laughed in my face."Abu Bakr said, "Rejoice."Then Umar caught up with me and I said to him the same as I had said to Abu Bakr. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Surat al-Munafiqun.
