He said to his companions, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah, so that they may disperse," and, "If we return to Medina, the mightier will surely expel the weaker from it."I mentioned that to my uncle, and my uncle mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ then summoned me, and I told him what I had heard. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and his companions, and they swore that they had said no such thing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disbelieved me and believed them. I was struck with a distress unlike anything I had ever experienced, and I withdrew into my house.My uncle said, "You only wanted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to disbelieve you and despise you."Then Allah the Exalted revealed, "When the hypocrites come to you" [Munafiqun 63:1]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me, recited the verse, and then said, "Allah has confirmed your truthfulness."
حدثنا عبد بن حميد حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى عن إسرائيل عن أبي إسحق عن زيد بن أرقم قال كنت مع عمي فسمعت
لأصحابه {لا تنفقوا على من عند رسول الله حتى ينفضوا} و {لئن رجعنا إلى المدينة ليخرجن الأعز منها الأذل} فذكرت ذلك لعمي فذكر ذلك عمي للنبي ﷺ فدعاني النبي ﷺ فحدثته فأرسل رسول الله ﷺ إلى عبد الله بن أبي وأصحابه فحلفوا ما قالوا فكذبني رسول الله ﷺ وصدقه فأصابني شيء لم يصبني قط مثله فجلست في البيت فقال عمي ما أردت إلا أن كذبك رسول الله ﷺ ومقتك فأنزل الله تعالى {إذا جاءك المنافقون} فبعث إلي رسول الله ﷺ فقرأها ثم قال إن الله قد صدقك
Sourced, agreed upon (by Bukhari and Muslim). Bukhari narrated it in the tafsir, chapter on His saying, "And when it is said to them, 'Come, the Messenger of Allah will seek forgiveness for you,' they turn their heads away" [Munafiqun 63:5]... etc, no. 4904, from Ubaydullah bin Musa. And Muslim narrated it, no. 2772, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq, in which he explicitly stated that he heard it directly.
