Abdullah bin Ubayy said during the expedition of Tabuk, "When we return to Madinah, the mightiest will surely expel the most lowly from it."The narrator said, "I went to the Prophet ﷺ and reported this to him, but Abdullah bin Ubayy swore he had not said it. My people blamed me, saying, 'You only wanted to cause this trouble.' So I went home and lay down sorrowful and grieved. Then the Prophet ﷺ came to me," or he said, "I went to him, and he said, 'Allah has confirmed your truthfulness.'"Then this verse was revealed, "They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse.'" [Munafiqun 63:7]
حدثنا محمد بن بشار حدثنا ابن أبي عدي أنبأنا شعبة عن الحكم بن عتيبة قال سمعت محمد بن كعب القرظي منذ أربعين سنة
أن عبد الله بن أبي قال في غزوة تبوك {لئن رجعنا إلى المدينة ليخرجن الأعز منها الأذل} قال فأتيت النبي ﷺ فذكرت ذلك له فحلف ما قاله فلامني قومي وقالوا ما أردت إلا هذه فأتيت البيت ونمت كئيبا حزينا فأتاني النبي ﷺ أو أتيته فقال إن الله قد صدقك قال فنزلت هذه الآية {هم الذين يقولون لا تنفقوا على من عند رسول الله حتى ينفضوا}
Bukhari also narrated it in tafsir, in the chapter on His saying, "That is because they believed, then disbelieved, so their hearts were sealed, and so they do not understand" [Munafiqun 63:3], hadith 4902, from the hadith of Shubah, through the same chain.
