Anas bin Malik reported,

He was absent from the battle of Badr and said, "I missed the first battle in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the polytheists. If Allah grants me the chance to witness fighting against the polytheists, Allah will surely see what I do."When the day of Uhud came and the Muslims were routed, he said, "O Allah, I declare myself innocent before You of what these people have brought," meaning the polytheists, "and I offer my excuse to You for what these others have done," meaning his companions. Then he advanced. Saad met him, and he said, "My brother, what have you done?"Saad said, "I was with you but could not do what he did."More than eighty wounds were found on him from sword strikes, spear thrusts, and arrow shots. We used to say that the verse "Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits" [Ahzab 33:23] was revealed concerning him and his companions.Yazid said he meant this verse.
