"Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray in Bayt al-Maqdis?"He said, "No."I said, "Yes, he did."He said, "You say that, bald one? On what basis do you say so?"I said, "On the basis of the Quran. The Quran is the judge between you and me."Hudhayfah said, "Whoever argues with the Quran has succeeded." Sufyan said, he means, "has won the argument," and sometimes he said, "has triumphed."So I recited, "Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque" [Isra 17:1].He said, "Do you see that he prayed in it?"I said, "No."He said, "Had he prayed in it, prayer there would have been prescribed upon you just as prayer in the Sacred Mosque was prescribed."Hudhayfah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a beast with a long back, stretched out like this, its stride extending as far as its sight could reach. The two of them did not part from the back of Buraq until they had seen Paradise and the Fire and all that has been promised for the Hereafter, then they returned the way they had come."He said, "People claim that he tied it up lest it bolt from him, but rather it was the Knower of the unseen and the seen who made it subservient to him."
[Its chain of transmission is sahih.] Humaydi related it, no. 449, from Sufyan bin Uyayna with the same chain, explicitly stating that he heard it directly, and Hakim graded it sahih (2/359), and Dhahabi agreed with him. Ibn Kathir said in his tafsir, "What Huzaifa said here is a denial of what others affirmed from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding tying the mount with a ring and performing the prayer at Bayt al-Maqdis, which has already been mentioned, and what has already been established takes precedence over his statement. Allah knows best what is correct" (3/12, 13).
