Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

Regarding Allah's statement, "And do not be loud in your prayer, nor too quiet in it, but seek a way between that" [Isra 17:110], he said this was revealed while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hiding in Makkah. Whenever he led his companions in prayer, he would raise his voice with the Quran, and when the polytheists heard him, they would insult the Quran, the One who sent it down, and the one who brought it. So Allah said to His Prophet, "And do not be loud in your prayer", meaning in your recitation, so that the polytheists hear it and curse the Quran, "nor too quiet in it" so that your companions cannot hear, "but seek a way between that".

عن ابن عباس

في قوله {ولا تجهر بصلاتك ولا تخافت بها وابتغ بين ذلك سبيلا} قال نزلت ورسول الله ﷺ مختف بمكة فكان إذا صلى بأصحابه رفع صوته بالقرآن فكان المشركون إذا سمعوه شتموا القرآن ومن أنزله ومن جاء به فقال الله لنبيه {ولا تجهر بصلاتك} أي بقراءتك فيسمع المشركون فيسبوا القرآن {ولا تخافت بها} عن أصحابك {وابتغ بين ذلك سبيلا}
