A woman came to me to buy dates, so I said, "There are better dates than these in the house." She came into the house with me, and I reached out to her and kissed her. Then I went to Abu Bakr and told him what had happened. He said, "Cover up your fault, repent, and do not tell anyone."But I could not bear it, so I went to Umar and told him about it.He said, "Cover up your fault, repent, and do not tell anyone."Still I could not bear it, so I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about it.He said, "Is this how you act toward the family of a man who has gone out to fight in the cause of Allah?"At that he wished he had only just become a Muslim in that very hour, and he was certain he was among the people of the Fire. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lowered his head for a long while, until Allah revealed to him, "And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the early hours of the night" up to His words, "a reminder for those who remember" [Hud 11:114].Abu Yusr said, "So I came to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited it to me."His companions asked, "Messenger of Allah, is this for him alone, or for people in general?"He replied, "No, it is for people in general."
[Hasan] Tabarani also narrated it in al-Kabir 19/165, hadith 371, from Qays bin Rabi through the same route, and Sharq al-Qadi corroborated him in Nasai's al-Kubra, hadith 11248, where he explicitly stated that he had heard it directly. On this subject there are also reports from Abu Umama [Muslim, hadith 2765], Wathila bin Asqa, and Anas bin Malik [Bukhari, hadith 6823, and Muslim, hadith 2764].
