When this verse was revealed, "Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it" [Baqarah 2:284], something entered their hearts the like of which had never entered before. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and complained about it.He said, "Say, we hear and we obey."So Allah cast faith into their hearts, and Allah revealed, "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers" [Baqarah 2:285], the verse, "Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. It will have what it has earned, and against it what it has incurred. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake."Allah said, "I have done so.""Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden like the one You placed upon those before us."Allah said, "I have done so.""Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us" [Baqarah 2:286], the verse.Allah said, "I have done so."
