I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The one who recites the Quran aloud is like the one who gives charity openly, and the one who recites the Quran quietly is like the one who gives charity in secret."
حدثنا الحسن بن عرفة حدثنا إسمعيل بن عياش عن بحير بن سعد عن خالد بن معدان عن كثير بن مرة الحضرمي
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول الجاهر بالقرآن كالجاهر بالصدقة والمسر بالقرآن كالمسر بالصدقة
[Hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapters on voluntary prayer, chapter on raising the voice while reciting in night prayer, no. 1333, from the hadith of Ismail bin Ayyash with this wording. Muawiya bin Salih followed him in narrating it as found with Nasai and others. Sulayman bin Musa also narrated it from Kathir bin Mura with this wording, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, nos. 658 and 1791. The hadith has many corroborating narrations with Hakim, 1/555, and others.
