He was with a group of people on a journey when one of the men sneezed and said, "Peace be upon you."Ali responded, "Upon you and upon your mother."The man seemed offended by this, so Ali said, "I only said what the Prophet ﷺ said. A man sneezed in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Peace be upon you,' so the Prophet ﷺ replied, 'Upon you and upon your mother. When one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And let the one responding to him say, May Allah have mercy on you. And let him say in return, May Allah forgive us and you.'"
Its chain of transmission is daif. Abu Dawud also recorded it in the Book of Manners, in the chapter "How to Respond to the Sneezer," hadith no. 5031, from the hadith of Mansur, through the same route.Hilal bin Yasaf never met Salim bin Ubayd and never saw him, and between them is an unknown man, as Hakim stated in 4/267.
