The Prophet ﷺ said, "Renunciation of the world does not mean forbidding what is lawful, nor does it mean squandering wealth. Rather, renunciation of the world is that you place no greater trust in what is in your hands than in what is in the hand of Allah, and that when you are struck by a calamity, you are more eager for the reward of that calamity than you would be for the calamity itself to have been spared you."
حدثنا عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن أخبرنا محمد بن المبارك حدثنا عمرو بن واقد حدثنا يونس بن حلبس عن أبي إدريس الخولاني
عن النبي ﷺ قال الزهادة في الدنيا ليست بتحريم الحلال ولا إضاعة المال ولكن الزهادة في الدنيا أن لا تكون بما في يديك أوثق مما في يدي الله وأن تكون في ثواب المصيبة إذا أنت أصبت بها أرغب فيها لو أنها أبقيت لك
[Its chain of transmission is extremely daif] Ibn Majah also narrated it in the Book of Zuhd, Chapter on Renouncing the World, hadith no. 4100, from the hadith of Amr bin Waqid, with the same chain of transmission.
