When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Hunayn, he passed by a tree belonging to the polytheists called Dhat Anwat, on which they used to hang their weapons. The companions said, "Messenger of Allah, designate for us a Dhat Anwat just as they have a Dhat Anwat."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Glory be to Allah! This is just like what the people of Musa said, 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' By the One in whose hand is my soul, you will surely follow the ways of those who came before you."
[Sahih] Humaydi also narrated it, no: 850, from Sufyan bin Uyayna through the same route, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (al-Ihsan): 6667, and Zuhri explicitly stated that he heard it directly, both in his version and in that of Ibn Jareer: 31/9. There is also a version on this subject from Abu Saeed [Bukhari, no: 3456, and Muslim, no: 2669] and from Abu Hurairah [Bukhari, no: 7319, and Ibn Majah, no: 3994].
