The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "None of you should take his brother's staff, whether in jest or in earnest. Whoever takes his brother's staff, let him return it to him."
حدثنا بندار حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا ابن أبي ذئب حدثنا
قال رسول الله ﷺ لا يأخذ أحدكم عصا أخيه لاعبا أو جادا فمن أخذ عصا أخيه فليردها إليه
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Dawud also narrated it in the Book of Manners, chapter on one who takes something in jest, hadith no. 5003, from Bundar with the same wording.On this topic, there are also narrations from Ibn Umar [Bazzar (Kashf Astar) 2/202, no. 1521], Sulayman bin Surad [Tabarani in al-Kabir 7/99, no. 6487], Jadah [Ahmad 3/471, and Nasai in Amal al-Yawm wal-Layla, no. 1064], and Abu Hurairah [Ibn Adi 7/2661, and Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah 10/264, no. 2571].
