The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not be spineless followers, saying, 'If people do good, we will do good, and if they wrong us, we will wrong them.' Rather, prepare yourselves so that if people do good, you will do good, and if they do evil, you will not act unjustly."

[Its isnad is hasan] Walid bin Abdullah is hasan al-hadith, and Muhammad bin Yazid Rafii, it became clear to me from his biography that he is hasan al-hadith apart from what was criticized of him. Part of the hadith has a supporting narration reported as a stopped report from Ibn Masud, found in Ibn Abdul-Barr's Jami Bayan Ilm* wa Fadlih, 2/112.
