The Prophet ﷺ dispatched two armies, placing Ali bin Abu Talib in command of one and Khalid bin Walid in command of the other. He said, "If there is fighting, then Ali is in overall command."Ali went on to conquer a fortress and took a slave girl from it. Khalid bin Walid then sent me with a letter to the Prophet ﷺ complaining about Ali's conduct.I came to the Prophet ﷺ and he read the letter. His face changed color, and he said, "What do you think of a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love?"I said, "I seek refuge with Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. I am only a messenger."So he fell silent.
