I witnessed battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and whenever he did not begin fighting at the start of the day, he would wait until the sun had passed its zenith, the winds began to blow, and victory descended.
حدثنا الحسن بن علي الخلال حدثنا عفان بن مسلم والحجاج بن منهال قالا حدثنا حماد بن سلمة حدثنا أبو عمران الجوني عن علقمة بن عبد الله المزني عن معقل بن يسار أن عمر بن الخطاب بعث النعمان بن مقرن إلى الهرمزان فذكر الحديث بطوله
شهدت مع رسول الله ﷺ فكان إذا لم يقاتل أول النهار انتظر حتى تزول الشمس وتهب الرياح وينزل النصر
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in "jihad," chapter on what time is preferred for the encounter, hadith no. 2655, through Hammad bin Salama, with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih in Ihsan, no. 4737, as did Hakim according to the criterion of Muslim, 2/116, and Dhahabi agreed with him. Its origin appears in Bukhari, no. 3160, through the hadith of Numan, with the same wording.
