The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to examine the eye and the ear carefully, and not to sacrifice an animal whose ear has been cut at the front, or cut at the back, or slit lengthwise, or pierced with a hole.Hasan bin Ali narrated to us, Ubaydullah bin Musa narrated to us, Israil reported to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Shurayh bin Numan, from Ali, from the Prophet ﷺ, the same report, with this addition. He said, "The one cut at the front is that whose ear tip has been cut off, the one cut at the back is that whose ear has been cut along the side, the slit one is that whose ear has been split, and the pierced one is that whose ear has a hole in it."
