He traced it back to the Prophet, who said, "No sacrifice may be offered of a lame animal whose limp is evident, nor of a one-eyed animal whose defect is evident, nor of a sick animal whose illness is evident, nor of an emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones."Hannad narrated to us, Ibn Abu Zaida narrated to us, Shuba informed us, from Sulayman bin Abdul-Rahman, from Ubayd bin Fayruz, from Bara bin Azib, from the Prophet ﷺ, a similar report with the same meaning.

Abu Dawud transmitted it in the Book of Sacrifices, chapter on what is disliked in sacrificial animals, no. 2802, Ibn Majah, no. 3144, and Nasai, no. 4376, all from the hadith of Sulayman with this chain. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 2912, as did Ibn Hibban, nos. 1046 and 1047, Ibn Jarud, nos. 481 and 907, Hakim, 1/467-468, Dhahabi, and others.
