He was asked about tayammum and said, "Allah, when mentioning ablution in His Book, said, 'Wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows' [Maidah 5:6], and concerning tayammum He said, 'Wipe your faces and your hands' [Maidah 5:6], and He said, 'As for the male thief and the female thief, cut off their hands' [Maidah 5:38]. The Sunnah regarding amputation is at the wrists, so what is meant here is the face and the two hands up to the wrists," meaning in tayammum.
