It is reported from the Prophet ﷺ that a man who had drunk wine was brought to him, and he had him struck with two palm branches around forty times. Abu Bakr did the same. When Umar came to power, he consulted the people, and Abdul-Rahman bin Awf said, "Let it be like the lightest of the prescribed punishments, eighty lashes." So Umar ordered that.

عن النبي ﷺ أنه أتي برجل قد شرب الخمر فضربه بجريدتين نحو الأربعين وفعله أبو بكر فلما كان عمر استشار الناس فقال عبد الرحمن بن عوف كأخف الحدود ثمانين فأمر به عمر
Agreed upon (muttafaq alayh). Muslim narrated it, in the chapters on legal punishments (Hudud), in the chapter on the punishment for wine, hadith no. 1706, from Muhammad bin Bashshar. Bukhari also narrated it, hadith no. 6773, from the hadith of Shubah, both in abridged and lengthy forms.
