The Prophet ﷺ said, "It is not lawful for anyone to give a gift and then take it back, except for a father with regard to what he gives to his child."Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated this to us, saying Ibn Abu Adi narrated to us from Husayn al-Muallim, from Amr bin Shuayb, who heard Tawsa narrating from Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas, who both traced this hadith back to the Prophet ﷺ.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ibn Majah narrated it in the Book of Gifts, chapter of one who gives something to his child then takes it back, no. 2377, from Muhammad bin Bashshar with the same wording. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1148, as did Ibn Jarud, no. 994, and Hakim, 2/46, and Dhahabi agreed with him. It will come again at length, no. 2131.
