The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the right to a thing's yield belongs to the one who bears responsibility for it.

Its isnad is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Business Transactions, chapter on one who buys a slave, uses him, then finds a defect in him, hadith no. 3508, and Nasai, 7/254, 255, hadith no. 4495, and Ibn Majah, hadith no. 2242, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Dhib, through this same chain. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, hadith no. 627, as did Ibn Hibban, hadith no. 1125, and others.
