I heard the Prophet ﷺ say in his sermon during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, "A borrowed item must be returned, the guarantor is liable, and a debt must be repaid."
حدثنا هناد وعلي بن حجر قالا حدثنا إسمعيل بن عياش عن شرحبيل بن مسلم الخولاني
سمعت النبي ﷺ يقول في الخطبة عام حجة الوداع العارية مؤداة والزعيم غارم والدين مقضي
[Its chain of transmission is hasan]. Abu Dawud recorded it in the Book of Business Transactions, chapter "On the Liability of a Borrowed Item," no. 3565, and Ibn Majah, no. 2295, from the hadith of Ismail, both at length and in brief, and Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 1023. Ismail bin Ayyash stated explicitly that he heard it from the Khawlani, the Syrian.On this subject there are also reports from Samura [to come, 1266], Safwan bin Umaya [Abu Dawud, no. 3562], and Anas [Ibn Majah, no. 2399].
