The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring made of gold, and he used to wear it with the stone facing the inside of his palm. The people then started having gold rings made for themselves. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw his ring away, and the people threw away their rings as well. He then had a ring made of silver, which he used for sealing letters but did not wear.
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا أبو عوانة عن أبي بشر عن نافع
أن رسول الله ﷺ اتخذ خاتما من ذهب وكان جعل فصه في باطن كفه فاتخذ الناس خواتيم من ذهب فطرحه رسول الله ﷺ فطرح الناس خواتيمهم واتخذ خاتما من فضة فكان يختم به ولا يلبسه
