The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a military expedition against a group from Khatham. The people sought refuge by prostrating themselves, but they were killed nonetheless. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that half of the blood-money be paid for them, and he said, "I am free of responsibility for any Muslim who lives among the polytheists."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Their two fires must not be visible to one another."
أخبرنا محمد بن العلاء قال حدثنا أبو خالد عن إسمعيل
أن رسول الله ﷺ بعث سرية إلى قوم من خثعم فاستعصموا بالسجود فقتلوا فقضى رسول الله ﷺ بنصف العقل وقال إني بريء من كل مسلم مع مشرك ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ ألا لا تراءى ناراهما
Its chain is daif. It appears in Kubra, no. 6982, and this is a mursal narration. Abu Dawud narrated it, no. 2645, as a connected narration, but its chain is also daif. The mursal version is more likely correct and more sahih, as Tirmidhi said, no. 1605.Ismail is Ibn Abu Khalid, and Qays is Ibn Abu Hazim. The hadith has daif supporting narrations.
