The Prophet ﷺ sent Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah as a collector of zakat. A man disputed with him over his charity, so Abu Jahm struck him. The man's people came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Retaliation, Messenger of Allah!"He offered them, "You shall have such-and-such," but they were not satisfied with it.He then offered, "You shall have such-and-such," and they accepted. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They replied, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people and said, "These men came to me seeking retaliation. I offered them such-and-such, and they were satisfied."But they said, "No."The Muhajirun were about to attack them, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered them to hold back, and they did. Then he called the men over and asked, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."He said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They said, "Yes."So he addressed the people, then asked, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."
