The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever kills a person under the protection of a covenant will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance can be detected from a distance of forty years' travel."
أخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن إبراهيم دحيم قال حدثنا مروان قال حدثنا الحسن وهو ابن عمرو عن مجاهد عن جنادة بن أبي أمية
قال رسول الله ﷺ من قتل قتيلا من أهل الذمة لم يجد ريح الجنة وإن ريحها ليوجد من مسيرة أربعين عاما
Its isnad is sahih. Ahmad narrated it: 2/186, and Atraf Musnad: 4/10, hadith: 5113, from the hadith of Marwan bin Muawiya Fazari, via this route. It is also in al-Kubra, hadith: 6952. Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, 2/126, 127, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
