I asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, a man comes to me wanting to buy something I do not have. Can I sell it to him and then purchase it for him from the market?"He replied, "Do not sell what you do not possess."
حدثنا زياد بن أيوب قال حدثنا هشيم قال حدثنا أبو بشر عن يوسف بن ماهك
سألت النبي ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله يأتيني الرجل فيسألني البيع ليس عندي أبيعه منه ثم أبتاعه له من السوق قال لا تبع ما ليس عندك
[Its isnad is hasan]. Tirmidhi narrated it in the chapter on business transactions, in the section on the dislike of selling what one does not possess, hadith no. 1232, from the hadith of Hushaym with this chain, and he said, hasan. It is also in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 6206, and Ibn Hazm graded it sahih. It has many paths of transmission, found in Ibn Jarud, hadith no. 602, and elsewhere.Abu Bishr is Jafar bin Abu Wahshiya.
