When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed the share of the near relatives among Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, Uthman bin Affan and I came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, these are Banu Hashim whose merit we do not deny because of the position in which Allah has placed you among them. But what about Banu Muttalib? You gave to them and withheld from us, even though we and they stand in the same relation to you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "They never separated from me in the days of ignorance or in Islam. Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib are one and the same." And he interlaced his fingers.
أخبرنا محمد بن المثنى قال حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أنبأنا محمد بن إسحق عن الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب
لما قسم رسول الله ﷺ سهم ذي القربى بين بني هاشم وبني المطلب أتيته أنا وعثمان بن عفان فقلنا يا رسول الله هؤلاء بنو هاشم لا ننكر فضلهم لمكانك الذي جعلك الله به منهم أرأيت بني المطلب أعطيتهم ومنعتنا فإنما نحن وهم منك بمنزلة فقال رسول الله ﷺ إنهم لم يفارقوني في جاهلية ولا إسلام إنما بنو هاشم وبنو المطلب شيء واحد وشبك بين أصابعه
