My uncle told me that during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they used to lease land in exchange for whatever grew along the small water channels, with the landowner reserving for himself a portion of the crop. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from doing that.I asked Rafi, "What about leasing it for dinars and dirhams?"Rafi replied, "There is no harm in leasing it for dinars and dirhams."Uzai differed with him.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Cultivation and Sharecropping, chapter on leasing land for gold and silver, hadith nos. 2346 and 2347, from the hadith of Layth bin Saad. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Transactions, chapter on leasing land for gold and silver coins, hadith no. 1547/115, and again after hadith no. 1548, from the hadith of Rabia Ray, with the same wording. It is also found in Kubra, hadith no. 4626.
