We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a delegation from Hawazin came to him and said, "Muhammad, we are a people of lineage and clan, and a calamity has befallen us that is not hidden from you, so show us favor, may Allah show favor to you."He said, "Choose between your wealth or your women and children."They said, "You have given us the choice between our honor and our wealth. We choose our women and children."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for what belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, it is yours. When I have prayed the noon prayer, stand up and say, 'We seek the help of the Messenger of Allah against the believers,' or 'the Muslims, regarding our women and children.'"When they had prayed the noon prayer, they stood and said this, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whatever belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib is yours."The Muhajirun said, "And whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Ansar said, "Whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Aqra bin Habis said, "As for me and the sons of Tamim, no."Uyayna bin Hisn said, "As for me and the sons of Fazara, no."Abbas bin Mirdas said, "As for me and the sons of Sulaym, no."But the sons of Sulaym stood up and said, "You have spoken falsely. Whatever belongs to us is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "People, return their women and children to them. Whoever keeps anything from this booty shall have six shares from the very first spoils that Allah grants us."Then he mounted his riding camel, and the people mounted as well, saying, "Distribute our share of the booty among us." They pressed him against a tree until his cloak was snatched away, and he said, "People, return my cloak to me. By Allah, if you had as many cattle as the trees of Tihama, I would have distributed them among you, and you would not find me miserly, cowardly, or a liar."Then a camel was brought, and he took a single hair from its hump between his two fingers and said, "Look, I have no share of this booty, not even this, except for the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you."A man stood up holding a ball of wool and said, "Messenger of Allah, I took this to mend a saddle-blanket for a camel of mine."He said, "As for what belongs to me and to the sons of Abdul-Muttalib, it is yours."The man said, "If it has come to this, then I have no need of it," and he tossed it aside. Then he said, "People, hand back the needle and the thread, for misappropriation of spoils will be a disgrace and a shame upon those who do it on the Day of Resurrection."
[Its chain of transmission is hasan]. Abu Dawud transmitted it in the Book of Jihad, chapter, On ransoming a captive with money, hadith no. 2694, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, by this route, and it is also in al-Kubra, hadith no. 6515. Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard it directly, as recorded by Ibn Jarud, hadith no. 1080, and others. The hadith is also found in al-Sira by Ibn Hisham, hadith no. 203, in my edition.
