Anas bin Malik reported,

The first case of public mutual cursing (liaan) in Islam occurred when Hilal bin Umaya accused his wife of committing adultery with Sharik bin Sahma. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and reported this to him.The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Produce four witnesses, or you will receive the lashes on your back." He repeated this to him several times.Hilal replied, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, Allah knows that I am truthful, and Allah will surely send down upon you something that will spare my back from the lashing."While they were in this situation, the verse of liaan was revealed to him, "And those who accuse their wives..." [Nur 24:6] until the end of the verse.He then called Hilal, who swore four testimonies by Allah that he was among the truthful, and a fifth invoking the curse of Allah upon himself if he was among the liars. Then the woman was called, and she swore four testimonies by Allah that he was among the liars.When she reached the fourth or fifth testimony, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stop her, for it brings about punishment."She hesitated until we had no doubt that she would confess. Then she said, "I will not disgrace my people for the rest of time," and she went through with the oath.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Watch her. If she gives birth to a child who is white, with straight hair and weak eyes, then he belongs to Hilal bin Umaya. But if she gives birth to one who is dark-skinned, with curly hair, of medium build, and with thin shins, then he belongs to Sharik bin Sahma."She gave birth to a child who was dark-skinned, with curly hair, of medium build, and with thin shins.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not for what has already been decreed in the Book of Allah, I would have dealt with her severely."The Sheikh said, "Qadi means one whose eyelashes are long, whose eyes are neither wide open nor bulging. And Allah knows best."

أخبرنا عمران بن يزيد قال حدثنا مخلد بن حسين الأزدي قال حدثنا هشام بن حسان عن محمد بن سيرين

عن أنس بن مالك قال

إن أول لعان كان في الإسلام أن هلال بن أمية قذف شريك بن السحماء بامرأته فأتى النبي ﷺ فأخبره بذلك فقال له النبي ﷺ أربعة شهداء وإلا فحد في ظهرك يردد ذلك عليه مرارا فقال له هلال والله يا رسول الله إن الله عز وجل ليعلم أني صادق ولينزلن الله عز وجل عليك ما يبرئ ظهري من الجلد فبينما هم كذلك إذ نزلت عليه آية اللعان {والذين يرمون أزواجهم} إلى آخر الآية فدعا هلالا فشهد أربع شهادات بالله إنه لمن الصادقين والخامسة أن لعنة الله عليه إن كان من الكاذبين ثم دعيت المرأة فشهدت أربع شهادات بالله إنه لمن الكاذبين فلما أن كان في الرابعة أو الخامسة قال رسول الله ﷺ وقفوها فإنها موجبة فتلكأت حتى ما شككنا أنها ستعترف ثم قالت لا أفضح قومي سائر اليوم فمضت على اليمين فقال رسول الله ﷺ انظروها فإن جاءت به أبيض سبطا قضيء العينين فهو لهلال بن أمية وإن جاءت به آدم جعدا ربعا حمش الساقين فهو لشريك بن السحماء فجاءت به آدم جعدا ربعا حمش الساقين فقال رسول الله ﷺ لولا ما سبق فيها من كتاب الله لكان لي ولها شأن قال الشيخ والقضئ طويل شعر العينين ليس بمفتوح العين ولا جاحظهما والله سبحانه وتعالى أعلم
