The Prophet ﷺ stayed three days between Khaybar and Medina, during which he consummated his marriage with Safiya bint Huyayy. I invited the Muslims to his wedding feast. There was no bread and no meat at it. He ordered that leather mats be spread out, and dates, dried curd, and clarified butter were placed upon them. That was his wedding feast. The Muslims said, "Is she one of the Mothers of the Believers, or one of those his right hand possesses?"They said, "If he veils her, then she is among the Mothers of the Believers, and if he does not veil her, then she is one of those his right hand possesses."When he set out, he prepared a place for her behind him and drew the veil between her and the people.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of marriage, in the chapter on taking female slaves as concubines and one who frees a slave girl and then marries her, hadith no. 5085, from the hadith of Ismail bin Jafar with the same wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 5578.
