We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the fourth day of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Exit the state of ihram and make it an Umra."This weighed heavily on our hearts and was difficult for us. When word of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "People, exit the state of ihram. Were it not for the sacrificial animal I have with me, I would have done the same as what you are doing."So we exited ihram, even to the point of being intimate with our wives and doing all that a person not in ihram does. Then, when the day of Tarwiyah came and we had Mecca behind us, we entered ihram again with the intention for Hajj.
أخبرنا إسمعيل بن مسعود قال حدثنا خالد قال حدثنا عبد الملك عن عطاء
قدمنا مع رسول الله ﷺ لأربع مضين من ذي الحجة فقال النبي ﷺ أحلوا واجعلوها عمرة فضاقت بذلك صدورنا وكبر علينا فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ فقال يا أيها الناس أحلوا فلولا الهدي الذي معي لفعلت مثل الذي تفعلون فأحللنا حتى وطئنا النساء وفعلنا ما يفعل الحلال حتى إذا كان يوم التروية وجعلنا مكة بظهر لبينا بالحج
