Anas bin Malik reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, and we set out with him. When he reached Dhul Hulayfah, he prayed Dhuhr, then mounted his riding camel. Once it had risen with him onto the open plain of al-Bayda, he entered the state of ihram for both Hajj and Umrah together, and we entered ihram along with him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca and we had performed the tawaf, he ordered the people to release themselves from ihram. The people were hesitant, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "Were it not that I have brought the sacrificial animal with me, I too would have released myself from ihram."So the people released themselves from ihram completely, even to the point of being permitted to approach their wives. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not release himself from ihram, nor did he shorten his hair, until the Day of Sacrifice.
