The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The truly poor person is not the one who goes around begging from people, turned away with a bite or two of food, or a date or two."The companions asked, "Then who is the truly poor person?"He replied, "It is the one who lacks the means to suffice himself, yet his condition is not noticed so that charity might be given to him, and he does not stand up to ask people for anything."
Sourcing, Bukhari related it in the Book of Zakat, chapter "The saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, "They do not ask people insistently" [Baqarah 2:273]," from the hadith of Malik, and Muslim, 101/1039. See the previous hadith, from the hadith of Abu Zinad through it, and it is in the Muwatta (Yahya), 923/2, and Kubra, no. 2353. No. 1479
