The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The truly poor person is not the one who is turned away with a date or two, or a morsel or two. Rather, the truly poor person is the one who refrains from begging. If you wish, recite 'They do not beg people persistently' [Baqarah 2:273]."
أخبرنا علي بن حجر قال أنبأنا إسمعيل قال حدثنا شريك عن عطاء بن يسار
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال ليس المسكين الذي ترده التمرة والتمرتان واللقمة واللقمتان إن المسكين المتعفف اقرءوا إن شئتم {لا يسألون الناس إلحافا}
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zakat, chapter "The poor person who has no wealth, etc.," hadith no. 1039, from the hadith of Ismail bin Jafar. Bukhari also narrated it in the Book of Tafsir, chapter "They do not ask people insistently," hadith no. 4539, from the hadith of Sharik bin Abu Nimr, with the same wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith no. 2352.
