The companions disagreed about the proper way to perform the ritual bath in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some of them said, "As for me, I wash this much and that much."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "As for me, I pour three handfuls of water over my head."
أخبرنا قتيبة قال حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحق عن سليمان بن صرد
تماروا في الغسل عند رسول الله ﷺ فقال بعض القوم إني لأغسل كذا وكذا فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما أنا فأفيض على رأسي ثلاث أكف
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, Chapter on the Recommendation of Pouring Water on the Head and Elsewhere Three Times, hadith 327, from Qutayba, and Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Menstruation, Chapter on Whoever Poured Water on His Head Three Times, hadith 254, from the hadith of Abu Ishaq through the same chain, and it is in Kubra, hadith 247.
