A woman asked the Prophet ﷺ about how to perform the ritual bath after menstruation, and he explained to her how to bathe. Then he said, "Take a piece of cloth scented with musk and purify yourself with it."She asked, "How do I purify myself with it?"He turned away and said, "Glory be to Allah, purify yourself with it."Ayesha said, "So I pulled the woman aside and told her, 'Trace with it the places where the blood was.'"
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of Menstruation, chapter "A woman rubbing herself with musk when she purifies herself from menstruation," hadith 314, and Muslim in the Book of Menstruation, chapter "The recommendation for a woman who has performed the ritual bath from menstruation to use a piece of musk at the site of the blood," hadith 332, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, with this same wording. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith 248.
