We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a funeral. When we reached the grave, the side-niche had not yet been dug, so he sat down and we sat around him as still as if birds were perched on our heads.
أخبرنا هارون بن إسحق قال حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن عمرو بن قيس عن المنهال بن عمرو عن زاذان
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في جنازة فلما انتهينا إلى القبر ولم يلحد فجلس وجلسنا حوله كأن على رءوسنا الطير
[Hasan] Reported by Abu Dawud, Book of Funerals, Chapter on how to sit by the grave, no. 3212 and others, and Ibn Majah, Book of Funerals, Chapter on what has been said about sitting in graveyards, no. 1548 and others, from the hadith of Minhal, both at length and in abridged form. It is also found in al-Kubra, no. 2128, and Bayhaqi graded it sahih in Ithbat Azab Qabr and Shuab al-Iman.
