When Umm Abban died, I attended along with the people and sat between Abdullah bin Umar and Ibn Abbas. The women began to weep.Ibn Umar said, "Will you not forbid these women from weeping? For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The deceased is punished for some of the weeping of his family over him.'"Ibn Abbas replied, "Umar used to say something like that. I once set out with Umar, and when we reached al-Bayda, he saw a group of riders beneath a tree. He said, 'See who these riders are.' I went and found that it was Suhayb and his family, so I returned and said, 'Commander of the Faithful, this is Suhayb and his family.' He said, 'Bring Suhayb to me.' When we entered Madinah, Umar was stricken, and Suhayb sat beside him weeping, saying, 'Alas, my brother! Alas, my brother!' Umar said, 'Suhayb, do not weep, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The deceased is punished for some of the weeping of his family over him."'"He said, I mentioned that to Ayesha, and she said, "By Allah, you are not relating this hadith from liars or those accused of lying, but hearing can err. Indeed, you have in the Quran what should suffice you, 'No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another'. Rather, what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said was, 'Allah increases the punishment of the disbeliever because of the weeping of his family over him.'"
أخبرنا سليمان بن منصور البلخي قال حدثنا عبد الجبار بن الورد
لما هلكت أم أبان حضرت مع الناس فجلست بين عبد الله بن عمر وابن عباس فبكين النساء فقال ابن عمر ألا تنهى هؤلاء عن البكاء فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن الميت ليعذب ببعض بكاء أهله عليه فقال ابن عباس قد كان عمر يقول بعض ذلك خرجت مع عمر حتى إذا كنا بالبيداء رأى ركبا تحت شجرة فقال انظر من الركب فذهبت فإذا صهيب وأهله فرجعت إليه فقلت يا أمير المؤمنين هذا صهيب وأهله فقال علي بصهيب فلما دخلنا المدينة أصيب عمر فجلس صهيب يبكي عنده يقول وا أخياه وا أخياه فقال عمر يا صهيب لا تبك فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن الميت ليعذب ببعض بكاء أهله عليه قال فذكرت ذلك لعائشة فقالت أما والله ما تحدثون هذا الحديث عن كاذبين مكذبين ولكن السمع يخطئ وإن لكم في القرآن لما يشفيكم ألا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى ولكن رسول الله ﷺ قال إن الله ليزيد الكافر عذابا ببكاء أهله عليه
