Someone asked Aisha, "How was the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at night? Did he recite aloud or silently?"She replied, "He used to do all of that. Sometimes he recited aloud, and sometimes he recited silently."
[Its chain of transmission is sahih] Abu Dawud narrated it in Witr, chapter on the time of Witr, hadith 1437, and Tirmidhi in Prayer, chapter on what has been said about reciting at night, hadith 449, from the hadith of Muawiya bin Salih, through this same chain. It is also found in Al-Kubra, hadith 1373. Tirmidhi said, [hasan] sahih gharib. Its basis is found in Sahih Muslim, in Purification, chapter on the permissibility of a person in a state of major impurity sleeping and the recommendation of performing wudu before doing so, and so on, hadith 26/307.
