I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying while sitting cross-legged.Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "I do not know of anyone who narrated this hadith other than Abu Dawud, and he is trustworthy. Yet I cannot help but consider this hadith to be in error, and Allah, the Exalted, knows best."

Its chain is daif. Ibn Khuzayma recorded it, no. 978 and 1238, from the hadith of Abu Dawud Umar bin Saad Hafari, through this route. It is also found in al-Kubra, no. 1363, and Hakim graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs, 1/258, 275, 276, and Dhahabi agreed with him.Humayd is Ibn Qays, and Hafs bin Ghiyath transmitted it using the ambiguous "an" formula. Ahmad bin Hanbal, Daraqutni, and others described him as one who concealed breaks in his chains of transmission.The hadith of Bukhari, no. 827, contradicts it, and even if this hadith were sahih, it would have to be understood as applying to a case of excuse.
