A man came on Friday while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon, dressed in shabby clothes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Have you prayed?"He replied, "No."The Prophet said, "Pray two rakahs."Then he urged the people to give charity, so they threw down some garments, and he gave the man two of them.When the following Friday came, the man arrived while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon, and the Prophet again urged the people to give charity. The man threw down one of his two garments.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This man came on Friday in shabby clothes, so I told the people to give charity, and they threw down some garments. I had two of them given to him. Now he has come again, and when I told the people to give charity, he threw down one of them."Then he rebuked him and said, "Take back your garment."
أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الله بن يزيد قال حدثنا سفيان عن ابن عجلان عن عياض بن عبد الله قال سمعت
جاء رجل يوم الجمعة والنبي ﷺ يخطب بهيئة بذة فقال له رسول الله ﷺ أصليت قال لا قال صل ركعتين وحث الناس على الصدقة فألقوا ثيابا فأعطاه منها ثوبين فلما كانت الجمعة الثانية جاء ورسول الله ﷺ يخطب فحث الناس على الصدقة قال فألقى أحد ثوبيه فقال رسول الله ﷺ جاء هذا يوم الجمعة بهيئة بذة فأمرت الناس بالصدقة فألقوا ثيابا فأمرت له منها بثوبين ثم جاء الآن فأمرت الناس بالصدقة فألقى أحدهما فانتهره وقال خذ ثوبك
[hasan] Reported by Tirmidhi, Prayer, chapter on what has been said regarding the two units of prayer when a man arrives while the imam is delivering the sermon, no. 511, and Ibn Majah, Establishment of Prayers, chapter on what has been said about one who enters the masjid while the imam is delivering the sermon, no. 1113, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna through this same route, and he made clear that he heard it directly. Tirmidhi said, "hasan sahih." It is also found in al-Kubra, no. 1719, and Ibn Ajlan made clear that he heard it directly, as recorded by Humaydi.
